Why Chinese "M" Is Not the Same as US "M"

The single most common mistake international buyers make when ordering Chinese womenswear is assuming that "M" means the same thing in China as it does at home. It does not. Two garments both labeled "M" can differ by an entire size in the bust.

The Root Cause

US, UK and EU letter sizes are built on Western body measurements. Chinese letter sizes are built on Chinese body measurements, which tend to be narrower through the shoulder and have different bust-to-waist ratios. The letters look the same, but the underlying numbers are not.

On top of that, Chinese brands use the CN code (like 165/88A) as the real reference. The letter S / M / L is a convenience label — it varies from brand to brand.

What This Means for You

• A Chinese "S" is not automatically smaller than a US "S".
• A Chinese "M" is not automatically your US size.
• The same brand may label different styles with the same letter but different finished measurements.

How to Choose the Right Size

Stop choosing by letter. Choose by number.

1. Measure your own bust (read our measurement guide).
2. Look at the CN code on the product page (read our CN code guide).
3. Match your bust to the CN code's second number (for example, an 88 cm bust matches 165/88A).
4. Check the finished garment measurement and fabric (read our fabric guide).

Brand Fit Still Matters
