Oversize vs Fitted: Chinese Garment Ease Guide for International Buyers

"I ordered a medium and it fits like a tent" or "I ordered a medium and I cannot breathe." Both complaints come from the same misunderstanding: shoppers compare the size label, not the garment's ease. In Chinese womenswear, two items marked M can differ by 10 cm or more around the bust because one is designed fitted and the other is designed oversize. This guide explains how ease works and how to choose the right cut for your body.

What Is Ease?

Ease is the difference between your body measurement and the finished garment measurement. If your bust is 88 cm and the blouse is 96 cm, the garment has 8 cm of bust ease. That number decides whether the piece looks tailored, comfortable, or deliberately slouchy.

The Four Common Ease Levels

1. Fitted (0–4 cm ease)

Cheongsams, wrap dresses, knit tops, and pencil skirts. The cloth sits close to the body. There is almost no room for movement or layering. If your measurement is between two sizes, size up — fitted pieces do not forgive. This is also where fabric stretch matters most (read our fabric stretch guide).

2. Semi-fitted (4–8 cm ease)

Everyday blouses, A-line shirts, straight-cut dresses. Comfortable, slightly shaped through the waist. The safest choice for most international buyers — you can usually order your true converted size without worry.

3. Relaxed (8–15 cm ease)

Mandarin-collar linen shirts, tunics, wide-leg trousers, cardigans. Designed to hang away from the body. If you want a neat silhouette, do not size up here; the garment is already larger than it sounds. If you prefer a slouchy look, stay true to size.

4. Oversize (15 cm+ ease)

Cotton linen coats, boyfriend shirts, padded jackets. These pieces are intentionally one or two sizes bigger than the label suggests. International buyers should order down one size unless they specifically want the boxy, layered look.

Why Chinese Brands Run Differently From Western Brands

Chinese pattern making is built on CN body data (read our CN size conversion guide). The base shapes tend to be slimmer through the shoulder and hip than US or EU patterns. A relaxed Chinese blouse can still feel narrower through the shoulders than a similar US style. This means:

  • Use the bust, waist and hip numbers — not the S/M/L label — to compare brands.
  • Check shoulder width on structured tops and jackets, even when the bust fits.
  • For trousers, compare hip and waist, not the "M" mark. Chinese high-waist pants sit higher on the torso than Western low-rise styles.

How to Decide Between Fitted and Oversize

  • Look at the product photos: is the model wearing the piece close to the body or billowing? The photos tell you the ease level better than the size name.
  • Read the brand's own fit notes — "runs small" or "relaxed fit" changes everything.
  • Use our Multi-Country Size Converter to translate your US/UK/EU size into the matching CN size, then adjust up or down based on the ease level described above.

Know the Brand Before You Order

Fit is a brand decision, not a country decision. Some Chinese brands default to relaxed cuts, others are firmly tailored. The Brand Size Matcher records each brand's typical ease, fabric stretch, and size-up/size-down advice, so you can stop guessing before you add the item to cart.
