How to Read Chinese Women's Clothing Size Labels

Most Chinese womenswear does not use a simple US 0 / 2 / 4 system. Instead, you will see codes like 155/80A, 160/84A, 165/88A printed on the hangtag. If you cannot read this code, you are guessing your size. This guide explains exactly what it means.

Break Down a Chinese Size Code

Take 160/84A as an example:

• 160 — recommended height in centimeters. It tells you the body height the garment is designed for, not your height on the label.
• 84 — recommended bust circumference in centimeters. This is the body measurement, not the finished garment measurement.
• A — body shape code. "A" means a standard, balanced body type. Other codes like B or C are used for fuller figures and are rare in mainstream womenswear.

These are reference ranges only. Every brand adjusts the numbers slightly. Always compare with the brand's finished size chart.

Body Measurement vs Finished Garment Measurement

This is the most important point. The "84" in 160/84A is your body bust, not the garment's bust. A finished garment is always larger than your body to allow movement. The gap is called ease (read our ease guide).

So when you look at a brand size chart, you will see two sets of numbers: your body measurement (the CN code) and the actual garment measurement. Compare your own body numbers with the CN code first, then check the garment measurement to decide fit.

What the Hangtag Tells You

A typical Chinese hangtag shows four things:

1. Brand name
2. Letter size (S / M / L)
3. CN code (160/84A)
4. Style number and fabric composition

The letter size is the least reliable. The CN code is the most useful. The style number lets you look up the exact product.

3. Check the brand's finished garment measurement and fabric stretch.
