How Fabric Stretch Changes Clothing Sizing for Chinese Womenswear

When you shop Chinese womenswear online, the size label is only half the story. The other half is the fabric. A stretch knit top and a non-stretch ramie blouse can share the exact same bust measurement on the size chart, yet fit two completely different bodies. International buyers who ignore fabric elasticity often end up ordering a size that looks correct on paper but feels wrong on the body.

Why Fabric Matters More Than the Size Number

Every finished garment measurement includes "ease" — the gap between your body and the cloth. Fabric stretch does the same job as ease, but invisibly. A fabric that stretches 8–15 cm around the bust can effectively forgive one full size difference. A non-stretch woven fabric cannot. This is why two Chinese brands can print the same M label and one fits snug while the other feels tight across the chest.

Common Chinese Womenswear Fabrics, by Stretch Level

High Stretch (forgiving, close-to-size)

• Knits & jersey: T-shirt cotton, modal, viscose jersey, most knit dresses. You can usually order your true size without sizing up.
• Stretch denim: Used for skinny jeans and fitted pencil skirts. The waistband expands slightly, so choose by hip measurement rather than waist alone.
• Blends with spandex/elastane: Up to 5% elastane changes everything — tailored trousers and wrapped dresses gain real give.

Low Stretch (size up if between sizes)

• Ramie / linen: Breathable but rigid. Chinese-style ramie blouses and wide-leg pants have almost no give. If your measurement is between two sizes, size up.
• Poplin cotton: Crisp shirting fabric used for mandarin-collar blouses. It holds its shape and will not stretch over the bust or shoulders.
• Satin & heavy silk: Smooth, soft but inelastic. Satin cheongsams and wrap dresses fit to the exact finished measurement with no forgiveness.

No Stretch at All (check measurements carefully)

• Xiangyunsha (gambiered Canton silk): A traditional Chinese dyeing craft, not a lightweight stretch fabric. The hand feels firm and crisp, and the garment will not give. Always match your bust and hip to the finished size chart, and size up if you prefer layering.
• Wool & tweed: Tailored jackets and vests hold structure. They fit small through the shoulders — pay attention to shoulder width as much as bust.

A Quick Rule of Thumb

• High-stretch fabric: Your measurement can sit 2–4 cm below the finished garment size and still fit.
• Low-stretch fabric: Match within 1–2 cm, or size up.
